Bible Passages for Tattoo Designs

Whatever your beliefs about the Bible, this book has changed our world.  The words in its pages are powerful and well known.  Many believers of the Christian faith will choose passages from the Bible if they would rather not have a picture style tattoo design.  No everyone has the whole thing as they don't want too big a tattoo. Instead many choose to have the reference of book, chapter and verse, if you do this we would recommend you learn your passage off by heart because if it is not well known text, people will be forever asking you what it says!  Below we will go through some of the most popular Bible passages for tattoo designs.

All quotations are form the NIV (New International Version), if you would like to see other versions www.biblegateway.com is a useful website. Type in the passage reference and selecting which translation you want to see the passage in.

If you have any more ideas for Bible passages that not many have heard of, please contact us and tell us the text reference and send us a picture if you can. We will publish them for all to see and be inspired by your tattoo.

The Lord's My Shepherd (23rd Psalm)

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

 3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
  for his name's sake.

 4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
  I will fear no evil,
  for you are with me;
  your rod and your staff,
  they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
  You anoint my head with oil;
  my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
  forever.

This Psalm is the most popular Bible passage for tattoo designs. It talks for God being our strength and being with us in the toughest time. Many who have come back from Afghanistan and Iraq have opted for this passage as it says how God will protect them with his rod and staff and was with them in times of imminent death.

It is a fairly large passage and would make a large tattoo piece. Not everyone wants such a large design, so instead they would opt to have the part of the passage that particularly speaks to them or just the Bible reference.

John 3:16

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

This small verse sums up pretty much the whole of the Christian faith, which makes it a popular Bible text for tattoo designs.

1 Corinthians 13

1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

The words of this book are often spoken at weddings to remind the couple of what true love should look like and how to treat each other. In a tattoo design the passage can make a very powerful memorial to the ones you love, showing how you feel about them.

Philippians 4:13

13I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Although it is such a little verse it speaks volumes and in its simplicity it can bring reassurance to the person that God will give them the strength through any situation.

1 John 5:5

Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Another gem of a verse and a powerhouse of meaning. It speaks of the potential that the believer can have, and they have the ability to over come the world through the strength of the Son of God.

Psalm 65:5 in Hebrew Tattoo                   Psalm 65:5

You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness,
  O God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
  and of the farthest seas
