The sun and moon are two of the most influential natural features of our everyday lives.  Their imagery have been used for thousands of years and the center of many myths, legends and fables.  This has led to their ever popular usage in tattoos across the years for both men and women.

We will take you through some of the meanings behind the images which have been used for countless tattoo designs to give you some ideas of how they can be used in your potential tattoo

Sun Symbolism Solo

There can be many reasons why you would wish to have a sun tattoo.

  • The sun is warmth and sustains all life upon this planet, this can lead to a very powerful tattoo about how you feel about yourself or someone significant in your life
  • If you have been through trauma, a rising sun can show the over coming of this and the hope after darkness
  • On the flip side of this a setting sun can show the end of period of your life
  • On headstones, the sun rising can symbolise the person's soul going up to heaven.

Moon Symbolism Solo

The moon in tattoos is usually shown as a crescent moon and often has facial features.  The moon has been worshiped for hundreds of years, as although she does not have the same warmth as the sun is just as needed as the sun.  With this in mind there are a fair few reasons why you may want to have a moon tattoo

  • The moon is a beautiful symbol of the night
  • You may simply be a night person and enjoy all things at night and so your moon tattoo is a symbol of who you are as a person
  • The moon is an ancient goddess and was worshipped before people worshipped the sun, she is a  symbol of motherhood and nature.

  The Sun and Moon Together

Many people are now choosing a design that joins these two powerful images together.  Together they are natural yin and yang, the contrast of the power and strength of the yellow sun and the cold moon.

Star Tattoos

The presence of stars in tattoo designs on their own for women and incorporated into designs for men has become more popular recently.

Many women have opted for having large single stars put in more hidden places such as on the back of their necks, behind their ears or hips.  These less obvious tattoos can be a nice secret between lovers, only they know where these secret marks are.

However, other women will want to have them in plain view as a beauty piece, such as small clusters on the side of their faces or a delicate band around the ankle.  These types of tattoos can be very attractive.

For men, they usually will have the star as part of a design to represent people or events that are significant to them and the tattoo design will be less delicate and the stars are chunkier and look stronger and more masculine.
