Tattoo Lettering
Having good
lettering for your tattoo can make or break your design.
We will take you through some of the most popular fonts and
styles that the tattoo nation have been using for hundreds of
years and in the more recent years.
Depending on
your design will decide which kind of lettering style that
you will wish to use for your tattoo. Another large
factor is where the lettering will go in your design and so
determine how big the letters will be and whether you need a
plainer font or not. For example if you are using a
banner in your tattoo, be careful not to have a very
complicated font as the small space for the wording
will make it hard to read the text.
Scripted Tattoo
Lettering
Of all the lettering styles, scripted is
one, if not the most popular form of lettering, it is a firm
classic. This lettering has been used throughout the ages for
some of the first sailors tattoos (for more nautical tattoo
designs see vintage
tattoo designs and military tattoo
designs). This font is popular for banners and names
as it is a softer font that will never go out of
style.
Medieval English Tattoo Lettering
This heavily serif font is especially
favoured for larger scripts tattoo designs and
names. What you
must be careful of when using this font, is that it sometimes
is hard to read the words especially if the design is
small.
Sans Serif or Plain Tattoo
Lettering
Some tattoo designs are purely script,
and in that instance you might want to have a plainer
font as the most important feature of the design is the words
ins elf and you want them to be easy to read.
Graffiti
Tattoo Lettering
In more recent years the graffiti style
has become popular. There are tattoo artists that
are now specialising in graffiti style
tattoos. The
lettering is more colourful and bit more fun than other
lettering styles and is the favourites of surfers and
younger tattoo veterans.
